There are no original ‘Castor’ homes left in Covert. The last one was burned down about a year and a half ago (summer 2000). Connie Castor remembers hearing stories about Bill Castor being a little wild! He would go out drinking and get into bar room fights.

(Carol O’Riley has original marriage certificate). John was born in Ohio. His occupation was a Farmer. Both were from Bangor, MI when they were married. He died of Chronic Myocarditis Hypertension at age 74 years 5 months 19 days. John’s father was William Castor who was born in PA and his mother’s maiden name was Mary Cross-birthplace listed as unknown. Van Buren Death E-97. Newspaper Obituary Issue 13 May 1930 – Van Buren: The funeral services for John Castor were held Friday, May 9 from Covert Congregational Church with the Rev. Albert Dawe in charge. The interment was in the home cemetery, the bearers being Dave Bowers, George Beattie, George Bender, Charles Gunsaul, Lawrence Kenney and Carl Sink. Mr. Castor was born at Hancock, Ohio in 1855, and passed away at the home of his son on Maple Avenue, May 6, 1930. Mr. & Mrs. Castor came to Van Buren county about the year 1884, locating at the North Mill. During the years intervening to 1896, they lived at West Bangor, Hartford, Lacota and Geneva. The family came to Covert 32 years ago, and remained here with the exception of one year spent in Ohio. Mrs. Castor passed away in 1919, having been a patient, helpless invalid for many years, and was tenderly cared for by her most devoted husband. Mr. Castor maintained his home here for a few years, then went to Kalamazoo, where he found employment and lived at the home of his son, Halson and family. Failing health came upon him, and two years ago he returned to covert, making his home with his son, Roscoe and family, until death claimed him to relieve him of his long suffering. Of the four children born to Mr. and Mrs. Castor, Roscoe is the only survivor, Halson, Mrs. Clara Struble and Mrs. Audie Bates having been taken to their final rest in the past few years. Others surviving him are eleven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, one brother, Jefferson Castor and family of Arlington, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Smith of Paw Paw and Mrs. Libby Hamlin of Spokane, Washington, and a half brother, Bertie Delong of Lawrence.

From Newspaper article Issue 1 November 1948: Roscoe Castor, 62 Dies Instantly On Airport Road Roscoe Castor, 62 of Covert met instant death Saturday, when he suffered a fractured skull and his chest was crushed in a car accident at the intersection of M-140 and County Road 380, on the Airport Road in South Haven Township. The Ford car being driven by Castor was completely demolished when according to police report, it was struck by the 1948 Cadillac, being driven by Harry Speed, 52, of 2748 Maypole St. Chicago who was traveling west on County Rd 380 and failed to stop at the through highway. Castor was driving north on M-140 Saturday when the fatal accident occurred. He was a retired rural letter carrier.

Obituary from the Herald Palladium online - January 02, 2002 Constance L. Brimhall Castor. COVERT - Constance Louise Brimhall Castor, 68, of Covert died Dec. 31, 2001. Memorials may be made to Covert Congregational Church, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5. The Rev. Duane Jones will officiate. An evening of visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford. Burial will be in Covert Cemetery. Connie was the eldest of four children. She moved to Covert when she was in third grade, graduated from Covert High School in 1951, as Valedictorian, and resided in Covert until her death. She married Duane Castor in 1951, and had three daughters. Connie worked in all branches of the Van Buren State Bank. Serving as teller, assistant comptroller, supervisor of the Covert Branch and assistant manager of the Hartford Branch. She retired in 1996, from the bank and was elected that same year as Covert Township Clerk and served until she retired in November of 2000. She held many volunteer positions including: PTA president, 4-H Club leader, school board member, Covert Congregational Church Sunday School Superintendent, church treasurer, chairman of the Church Board of Directors, Girl Scout and Brownie leader. She has been on the Alumni Committee Board and was a member of the Rev. A.E. Grice Scholarship Fund Board of Directors. She worked many years with the Van Buren County Fair helped organize the Square Dance Club Hits and Misses. She was a Mary Kay Consultant and was always sewing, knitting and cooking. She was preceded in death by her parents, Graham and Inez Brimhall and her husband of 45 years, Duane E. Castor. Survivors include: three daughters - Colleen New of Leroy, Mich., Lauren (Craig) VanDerveer of Coloma and Christine (Bob) Cooper of Charlotte, Mich.; a brother, Graham "Bud" (Joyce) Brimhall of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and sisters - Barbara Hunter of Summit, Ark., and Marjorie "Midge" (Carlo) Combs of Portage, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
