Baumann’s and O’Riley’s

My Great Great Great Grandfather’s were John Baumann & Albert Grade. John’s son Herman Ludwig Baumann was born February 1853. Herman married Augusta Grade between 1874 and 1877 in Germany. Herman died of chronic hepatitis apoplexy in Baroda Township, MI March 8, 1932. Augusta was born April 19, 1858 and died from bronchial pneumonia in Baroda Township, October 30, 1927. Both are buried in Ruggles Cemetery, Baroda, MI. Herman and Augusta had at least 11 children: Amanda July 1880, Matilda Augusta April 25, 1882, Mary February 1884, Emil October 1885, William June 1887, Gustav January 24, 1890, Lydia July 1892, Henry October 1894, Otto April 1897, Elsie February 1898, and Emma 1899.

Matilda Augusta Baumann married Charles Gnewuch on October 23, 1901 in St. Joseph, MI at the age of 19. At the time she was residing in Bridgman. Charles was 22 and living in Stevensville, MI were he was a farmer. Matilda died May 27, 1952. Charles was born in Sincolu January 25, 1879 . He died in Benton Harbor, MI August 18, 1909. His parents were Carl Gnewuch and Johanna Krugle who were both born in Germany. Matilda & Charles had 3 children: Edna October 7, 1903, Marge November 16, 1905 & Carl Henry (Pete) March 6, 1907. Matilda married Oscar O’Riley. Oscar was born July 15, 1876 in Chicago, IL. He was a salesman of retail fruit. Matilda & Oscar had 5 children: Ruth September 25, 1915, Stella August 23, 1917, Joseph Charles May 29, 1919, Phyllis January 31, 1922, and Conalie who was 1 year 1 month 30 days old when he died June 13, 1924. Oscar died October 10, 1948 and is buried in Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor, MI. Matilda is buried in the Watervliet Cemetery, MI.

Joseph was born in Covert, MI. He was 21 when he married Dorthy LaVerne Frazee who was 19 on April 22, 1939. His occupation at the time was a paper mill worker. Joseph then worked at and retired from Clark Equipment, Buchanan, MI. Dorthy was born in Watervliet and died there May 21, 1983 at the age of 63. Joseph married Martha Alma Peel April 23, 1993. Her father was Birt James DeFoar and her mother’s maiden name was Lois Martha Bufford-both were born in Arkansas. Martha was born May 17, 1926. They still reside in Watervliet.

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Herman Bauman of Baroda, who died last Tuesday, were conducted Thursday at the home of a son, Gustavous Bauman, near Baroda. The Rev. Hannenberg of the Evangelical church of Baroda officiated. Burial was in the Baroda cemetery. Mrs. Baumnn died after an illness of eight weeks.

Numbers Being Assigned Preparatory To U. S. Lottery Oct. 29

The first step in the selective military service program for young, men in this section of Berrien county was taken Monday when the members of the draft board for District No. 1 gave numbers to the 6,417 men, registered in the district Numbering of the registrants was the first official act of the local draft board composed of Chairman, Lester Neuman, of St. Joseph, B. T. Foley, Benton Harbor, secretary and Solon Emery, Benton Harbor. They were assisted by Ethel Westfall, who has been named as the clerk of the board, and Charles Piehl, who volunteered to assist. The numbering took place in the city hall here. The 6,417 cards were shuffled for 20 minutes by the members of the draft board and their assistants before the first card was selected and stamped No. 1 to make the numbering as fair as possible. The numbers given each, registrant last night will be used to determined how each draftee will be called before the board for examination and it will depend upon how the numbers are drawn in the major lottery drawing to be held in Washington a week from today. Secretary of War Stimpson will draw the first number, it was said. The first number drawn in the national lottery will be the first number call for each local draft board. Mr. Neuman stated today that it will be some time before they will be able to notify, each registrant of his number. The numbering of registrants Districts 2 at Berrien Springs and District 3 at Niles will be held today or tomorrow, it was said. Guy Heim, chairman of District No. 2 announced definitely today that the board will establish its headquarter in Berrien Springs instead of Niles, because Niles is entirely out of the district. There are 2,430 names in District 2 and 3,330 in District 3. The names on the first 50 cards numbered last night, giving the mail address only, were as follows:

Carl A. Lindemann, 81, Resident Of Millburg, Dies Friday
Carl A. Lindemann, 81, a resident of Millburg for the past 37 years, died at 4 p. m. Friday at his farm home, where he had been ill for the past year and a half. He was born Feb. 5, 1864, in Germany, coming to this country in 1881, at the age of 17, when he settled in Baraboo, Wis. After two years he moved to Chicago, living here until 1908, when he came to Berrien county and began residing at his farm near Millburg. Mr. Lindemann leaves his wife, Lena, and the following children: Louis, of Chicago; William and Ernest, members of the Benton Harbor police force; Adolph, of Watervliet; Fred, Elmer, and Mrs. Ella Bohn, of Benton Harbor; Sgt. Robert Lindemann, now home on furlough from overseas service; Pfc.Alfred Lindemann, In Germany; and 15 grandchildren. A brother, Herman, of Chicago, also survives. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p. m. Monday at the Kerlikowske chapel, St. Joseph, by the Rev. E. A. Kuhn, pastor of St. Peter's Evangelical church. Burial will be in the Millburg cemetery. Friends may call at the Kerlikowske mortuary, where the body will be until the hour of the services.

Mrs. Amanda Schmidt
Mrs. Amanda Schmidt, 67, of Royalton township, died at 7 p.m. Sunday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Emma Peterson of Hinchman. Mrs. Schmidt was born June 27, 1880 in Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herrnan Baumann. She was married in 1902 to William Schmidt of Royalton township who survives her.
Surviving besides her husband are three children, Fred Schmidt of St. Joseph, Albert Schmidt of Niles and Mrs. Emma Peterson of Hinchman; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Phelps of St. Joseph, Mrs. Mathilda O’Riley of Coloma, Mrs. Mary Stama of Three Oaks, and Mrs. Elsie Relos of Chicago; and three brothers, William Bauman of Portland, Ore., Henry Bauman of Los Angeles, Calif., and Emil Baumann of Etna, Calif.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday in Trinity Lutheran church of which the deceased is a member. The Rev. W. W. Stuenkel will officiate, and burial will be in Spring Run cemetery.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20, 1949 – The News Palladium

Mr and Mrs. Arthur H. Phelps, pioneer residents of Lake Shore drive, St. Joseph, are quietly celebrating their golden wedding anniversary today. They were married on December 20, 1899 in the Benton Harbor Methodist church. All of their married life has been spent at 82 Lake Shore drive, where Mr. Phelps was born on July 2, 1868. His father, Chester Powell Phelps came to St. Joseph in 1859 from Gloverville, N. Y., and purchased one of the first tracts of land along Lake Michigan south of St. Joseph. Mrs. Phelps, the former Emma Bauman, was 71 years old on August 20 of this year. Mr. Phelps has been a fruit fanner, solicitor for Chicago commission houses when fruit was shipped to Chicago by boat from St. Joseph and was in partnership with Harvey Seasongood in the manufacture of cement blocks. He also built and operated the Glenlord hall. They have one son, Ralph, and two grandchildren, Craig and Deborah.

O'Riley Rites Held
WATERVLIET, Aug. 1 - Funeral services were largely attended Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Matilda A. O'Riley, 70, of Coloma, former well-known Watervliet resident, who died Sunday morning at the Watervliet Community hospital where she had been admitted a few hours previously after suffering a heart attack. The five daughters and two sons surviving her are: Mrs. Adolph Lindermann, Mrs. Earl Shinmer and Joseph O'Riley, all of Walervliet; Mrs. Guy Thompson, Mrs. Claude Tacy, and Henry Gnewuch, Coloma, and Mrs. Roy Puritt, of Benton Harbor.

Mrs. Matilda O'Riley
WATERVLIET, July 23 – Mrs. Matilda A. O'Riley, 70, died at 7a. m. Sunday at the Watervliet Community hospital where she was admitted at 1:00 a. m. after suffering a heart attack at her home in Coloma. Mrs. O'Riley, widow of Oscar O'Riley, was born April 25, 1882, in Russia, but came to the United States when eight years of age. She was a former Watervliet resident. She was one of 12 children of Herman and Augusta Baumann and is survived by five daughters Mrs. Adolph Lindemann and Mrs. Earl Shimer, Watervliet; Mrs. Gus Thompson and Mrs. Claude Tacy Jr., Coloma, and Mrs. Roy Pruitt of Benton Harbor, two sons, Henry Gnewuch, Coloma, and Joseph O'Riley of Watervliet. She also leaves 14 grandchildren; three sisters Mrs. Arthur Phelps of St. Joseph, Mrs. George Stama of Three Oaks and Mrs. John Relos of Chicago, three brothers, Henry Baumann of Los Angeles, Calif., Emil, also of California, and William of Portland Ore.
The body is at the Hutchins funeral home where friends may call until 11 a. m. Wednesday when it will be taken to Plymouth Congregational church to lie in state until 2 p. m. the hour of the service, which will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Boardman.

Watervliet Band Boosters Make Corsages
WATERVLIET, Nov. 23 — The Watevliet Band Boosters are making Christmas corsages and door swags. Mrs. Joseph O'Riley has been appointed chairman of the project. The V-M portable hi-fi and long play albums which will be awarded at the Watervleet-Cassopolis basketball game Dec. 20 by the Band Boosters are now on display at the Woodruff Surplus store on Main street. The Band Boosters hope to complete payments on 40 new band uniforms purchased last spring and to begin a fund for an additional 10 uniforms and other band supplies.

Polio Funds Rolling In
Watervliet Area Drive Tops $1,125 Quota
WATERVLIET, Feb. 5—Watervliet city and township has topped its quota of $1,125 for the March
of Dimes drive by $379, with receipts for one more week's March of Dimes tournament, and a few straggling mailers still to come In, according to Mrs. Leonard Krall, president of the sponsoring Literary Guild. Aiding Literary Guild members in the Mothers March which netted $121.94 were: Mrs. Joseph O'Riley, Mrs. Harold Snyder, Mrs. J. D. Gonzales, Mrs. Harry Parrett, Mrs. Earl Smith, Mrs. Barbara Baushke, Mrs. Phillip Lynoh, Mrs. Joseph Kolenko, Mrs. Raymond Camp, Miss Mary Frances Scheid, Mrs. Allen Retzlaff, and Mrs. Donald Young. The school children contributed both time and money donations during the past weeks. High school students assisting with Tag Day and -the "Blanket" campaign at home games brought in $132.87. South elementary students contributed $88.44 North elementary students $54.69; St. Joseph's Catholic students, $68.61. The March of Dimes Bowling tournament at Wil-O-Paw Lanes, under the direction of Al Stockdale and Al Kolberg, has produced $333, with one week still to go.

Mrs. George Stama
BBIDGMAN, March 27 – Mrs. George (Mary B. Stamatopulos) Stama died Wednesday at 3 p. m. in her home on Pearl street. She was married to George Stama in Chicago on Jan. 21, 1914. They came here in 1920. For many years, Mrs. Stama was a member of the Home Economics club in Three Oaks. Her husband survives, as do three brothers, Emil Baumann, Greenview, Calif.; Henry Baumann, Los Angeles, Calif., and William Baumann, Milwaukee, Oregon; two sisters, Mrs, Arthur Phelps of St. Joseph and Mrs. John Relos, Chicago ILL., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p. m. in the Boyd funeral chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. William Krummel, pastor of the Baroda Zion Evangelical and Reformed church. Burial will be in Greenland cemetery.

William Baumann
Mrs. Bert Henderson, North Shore dr., Benton Harbor, has received word of the death of her uncle, William Baumann who died Tuesday morning at his home on Johnson Creek street, Portland. Ore. Besides his niece. Mrs. Henderson, survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Emma Phelps of St. Joseph, and Mrs. Elsie Relos of Chicago, and two brothers, Emil and Henry, both of California. Mr. Baumann's parents, and seven brothers and sisters, all residents of Berrien and Van Buren counties, preceded him in death.

April 19 - Open House Will Honor O'Rileys
WATERVLIET-Mr. and Mrs. Joseph O'Riley's 25th wedding anniversary will be celebrated at an open house for all relatives and friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Frazee, 387 Shore lane, Sunday, April 19, between 2 and 5 o'clock.The O'Riley’s were married by :he Rev. John Parron of the Watervliet Congregational church on April 22, 1939. Their attendants were Mr. and Mrs.Earl Shimer, Sr.,of Watervliet. Mrs. O'Riley Is the former Dorothy Frazee of Watervliet. Her parents, the Floyd Frazees, and the honorees son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene O'Riley of Watervliet, are hosting the open house. The O'Rileys have three grandchildren.

Mrs. John Relos
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Chicago for Elsie Baumann Relos who died in that city at 12:30 a.m. Thursday following an illness of several months duration. Mrs. Relos was born 65 years ago on a farm near the Hathaway school south of Stevensville and spent her girlhood in Baroda. She was the daughter of the late Herman and Augusta Baumann. While residing in this area she attended the public and the Evangelical Lutheran schools at Baroda.
She made her home in Chicago in 1924 following her marriage to John Relos. She leaves her husband; two sons, George, of Arlington Heights, ILL., and Harold, of Jacksonville, Fla; a sister.
Mrs. Emma Phelps now residing in Punta Gorda, Fla; a brother, Henry, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and three grandchildren. Five sisters and four brothers preceded Mrs. Relos in death.

To Dedicate New Window
WATERVLIET - The new stained glass window recently installed in the sanctuary of Plymouth Congregational church at Watervliet will be dedicated during the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday, Sept. 8. The window, which was purchased with memorial gifts, depicts-Christ knocking at the door in illustration of Revelation 3:20. A coffee hour will follow the service. Serving on the stained glass window committee were Mrs. Velda Tatter, Ellsworth Westcott, Mrs. Maybelle Schultz, Paul Emerson, Mrs. Dorothy O'Riley and Arthur Lee, chairman.

25 Years Ago
Mrs. Matilda O'Riley has sold her residence property on Paw Paw Avenue, Coloma, to Mr. and Mrs. Myrl Arnold of Paw Paw Lake, and has purchased a small home near the Ellinee on the north side of Paw Paw Lake. Mrs. O'Riley's son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pruett, and their son, who have been living with her, have moved to a cottage at Beechwood Point, Paw Paw Lake.
